Following the success of last year’s Parallel Lines Art Show in Yeoford, another exhibition is planned this year, to showcase art and artists from in and around our community, and to raise money for a new community hall. The exhibition is planned to run over the weekend from 19th -21st November 2010.
This time I thought that it would be good to set up a theme to help give the exhibition a more coherent feel. I’d been reading recently about how many of the communities in our part of Devon have links to ancient celtic sacred groves - these were circular glades carved out of the woodland or rings of massive tree trunks, and called “nemetons”.
Many local place names to our north and west still contain “nymet”, “nympton” or “nymph”. These must have been focal points for the community, for worship, celebrations, and perhaps even art exhibitions (!), just as our village halls are today. As such, I thought it would be good to give the exhibition a theme of “wood” and/or “community”, and perhaps give the exhibition the sub-title “tree rings”.
Of course, you’re welcome to exhibit whatever you like, and if you choose to create some art relating to the theme, please interpret it as widely as you wish (subject, material, technique, whatever...).
